Are All Inclusive Resorts A Good Deal?

When planning a trip to Mexico or the Caribbean, there are several things to consider. One of the first thoughts for most people, particularly if they are new to the area, is whether or not to choose an “all inclusive” resort. The answer is, “It depends”.

First of all, it will depend on where you are planning to travel. If you are traveling to Mexico, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, I often suggest a quality all inclusive resort. These areas have been offering all inclusive options for decades. The Couples Tower Isle in Jamaica is the first all inclusive resort in the Caribbean, opening in 1949 and creating a concept which has grown rapidly in Jamaica. Couples, along with several others in Negril and Ocho Rios provide award-winning high quality cuisine in their restaurants and the service is impeccable with tips not allowed by the staff. This allows you to relax and enjoy your vacation without carrying cash or a credit card to the beach, the pool, or the dining areas. Similar high quality food and drink service can be found in Mexico, particularly the Riviera Maya/Cancun area and the Dominican Republic.

In the past, “all inclusive” resorts became known for nightly tasteless buffets with one kitchen for several restaurants and low quality spirits along with some personnel “encouraging” (and occasionally basing their service on) tips, etc. Although, a few of these are still in business and cater to a very specific client, there are many beautiful luxury all inclusive resorts which are among the best resorts in the world.

Most of the Caribbean Islands still have not fully embraced the “all inclusive” concept and though some may offer all inclusive “options”, will generally operate on the “European Plan”, not including meals and drinks. Yes, there are a few luxury all inclusives in locations such as St. Lucia, St. Martin, Antigua, and a handful of others that I can absolutely recommend. But, Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican Republic are three destinations where “All Inclusive” is the rule and for anyone wanting a beautiful beach vacation with virtually everything included in a world-class resort with impeccable service, gourmet dining options, top shelf spirits and no tipping, this is truly a great value and you will not be disappointed.
